Dear LJ,
I hadn't originally been intending to bother voting in the 'election', on the principle that anyone who actively seeks power is probably constitutionally unsuited to wield it*, and there's no ticky box on the poll for 'none of the above'.
But for most of this weekend, I've been unable to read a good part of LJ without my jaw dropping open. I have never seen this horrifying level of trolling, general churlishness and outright obnoxiousness before, and all from (theoretically at least) adults, as far as I can make out. It completely beggars belief. And the sad thing is? It mostly seems to be coming from the supporters of one particular candidate. The sadder thing is? No effort has been made to rein them in, even when their behaviour has gone beyond obnoxious and ended up in the neighbourhood of potentially harmful.
On the bright side though, this behaviour did prompt me to vote. My decision was formed largely on the calibre of the support for one particular candidate, because if that's the kind of company they keep, then I suspect that my opening position on the whole 'election' issue was indeed a sound one.
No lulz
Me
*using the word 'power' loosely there, since I think the elected post is patently a cosmetic exercise, but that's a different story
