catspawI just read a comment in someone's LJ - and to my shame, I can't remember where exactly - but it kinda struck a chord. And prompted this.

There’s no-one around to catch Jack as he falls. Time was, Daniel would have done it in his own inimitable style. He’d’ve filibustered flashbacks into oblivion - or if that failed, given Jack the blowjob to end ’em all and held him in his arms afterwards in perfect understanding.
But now there’s no one. Carter? God! No chance! She’s no Daniel, she’s too brittle. Teal’c? No way Jack will look weak in front of him. He’s not that close to anyone else.
So, he’ll do his best to deal, pull himself together, and by God, he’ll win out.
Yeah. Right.
