While procrastinating about -- something or other today, this thought popped into my head, as they tend to do when one's deliberately idling. What makes people pick their lj handles? Is there a story behind them, or a reason? Looking at my flist, I can figure out some of them, or at least make an educated guess but others of them puzzle me mightily.

So - would any of you care to share the reasons for your choices?

Cat's paw - a person used by another as a tool.

It seemed appropriate for a psuedonym - plus the pun appealed to me ;-)

Wasnt that also a star Trek ep? The halloween, witches and wizards one?

Mine is easy - Nicci_Mac - it's my name! I dont use aliases at all though sometimes I wish I had. Oh and Cats... ping me if you've got pics to share?

[identity profile] catspaw-sgjd.livejournal.com 2005-11-28 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
It was a TOS ep, yes - although that didn't influence my choice (it was a terrible ep as far as FX went, even by the standards of the time *g*). And yes, yours was one of the ones I'd worked out LOL

The pics - hmmm. They didn't turn out that great, most of them are blurred beyond redemption :-( Not just the ones I took either. I don't know that any of them are salvageable, unless there's something really clever that photoshop can do with them - I'll have to ask skater. There is one good one though - I'll send it to you asap. But I'm having to rely on the ones you took, they turned out great :-)

[identity profile] nicci-mac.livejournal.com 2005-11-28 08:26 am (UTC)(link)
God yeah, it was a dire ep wasnt it!!!

I'm quite good with PS too so I'll take a look. Skater sent me a copy of the one with Cliff and it looks like it could be sharpened a little but it's bot really that bad. Even without my new glasses. I'll see what I can do tonight when I get home form work.

[identity profile] catspaw-sgjd.livejournal.com 2005-11-28 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah, dire hardly begins to cover it - it comes in at number 3 on my list of worst ToS Eva.

Okay, I'll send you the lot then, shall I? Not just the ones with Cliff? Because if you could do anything to salvage any of them, I'd be very grateful! But if that's a huge imposition, let me know and I'll just send you the relevant ones :-)

[identity profile] nicci-mac.livejournal.com 2005-11-28 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Let me guess - Brain, brain and brain would be on that list too!!! LOL!

Yeah - send them all but even sharpening them up might not work. I can but try

[identity profile] catspaw-sgjd.livejournal.com 2005-11-29 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
Let me guess - Brain, brain and brain would be on that list too!!! LOL!

It is, but it's edged out of the top spot by 'Return to Eden' and 'The Empath'. Worst. Episodes. Ever.

[identity profile] msbeata.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know how old I was when I first saw The Empath but I loved it. I spent months fantisizing that I was an empath healing people, partcularly the guy I had a crush on.

[identity profile] catspaw-sgjd.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? You liked that one? Just goes to show... Although I suppose the premise wasn't that bad, the *idea* of the Empath's abilities - but to me, it just seemed to be a big ol' non-story with a lot of gratuitous violence :-(

I'm curious though now *g* - what would you classify as your worst ever eps? Or didn't you have any? And what would you say were your all time faves?

Nosy bitch, ain't I? ;-)

[identity profile] msbeata.livejournal.com 2005-12-07 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Well obviously Tribbles rock.
And I like Spock in heat.
Oh and Henry Mudd, the one with all the clones where he ends up with his wife.
The one that was supposed to introduce a spin-off, I think I would have liked that spin-off.

On a related note, I loved when DS9 gave us the other perspective on the Tribble ep.

Ones I didn't like? The one with the planet eater. The one where Jim's friend had superpowers and Jim's headstone had the wrong name.

I suppose if we are to be married you need to know these things. ;-)

[identity profile] skater-g8r.livejournal.com 2005-11-27 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
well I can't go into the full reasons behind my tag, becuase its rude *g* but other than that, it rhymed with gater and was easy to remember *g* plus I was into ice hockey at the time, and I love ice in general *-), tho i never actually even went ice skating, I since have, and loved it..that would be my perfect date I reckon...going ice skating...so If we ever go on a date Cats...well you know where to take me *g*

LOL I sound like a 'Blind date' contestant dont I? *g*

[identity profile] catspaw-sgjd.livejournal.com 2005-11-28 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
*g* And the 'skater' bit was the bit I was curious about too...

Oddly enough, I love ice skating as well :-) It was the only sport I was ever any good at ::plots a spectacular date::

ps We had snow on Friday - quite a bit of snow - but it all disappeared by Saturday

pps No I haven't. I found s1 on sale cheap and bought instead *g*

[identity profile] skater-g8r.livejournal.com 2005-11-28 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
::plots a spectacular date::

OOh cant wait!..then we can go horse riding, and hand gliding and mountain climbing *bg*

ps We had snow on Friday - quite a bit of snow - but it all disappeared by Saturday

we had snow today *g* and it went today aswell 8-/

I found s1 on sale cheap and bought instead *g*

Oh you jammy thing..but so glad you got it, now all you need is s2/3 and 4 *bg*

[identity profile] catspaw-sgjd.livejournal.com 2005-11-29 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
Ack, no to the horse riding, I'm afraid. I don't trust horses as far as I could throw one - both ends are equally dangerous :-( (Childhood trauma there)

I shall just have to admire you from afar while you ride one :-)

[identity profile] skater-g8r.livejournal.com 2005-11-29 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
awww ::huggles:: sorry about your bad experience 8-/
I've been threatened a few times by the back end of a horse, never been kicked tho, but i've been bitten and stood on, and one tried to roll while I was on her, but i think she was tired and wanted a lay down *g* also had one try to buck me off, but i managed to stay in the saddle..she was a fiesty one *-) also had one decide to go off galloping when I hadnt asked..that was fun *-)
so your reluctance is completely understandable. *-D

[identity profile] catspaw-sgjd.livejournal.com 2005-11-29 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Ach, you have nothing to be sorry for (although I appreciate the fellow feeling ::smile::). Pat Smythe has a lot to answer for. I've only ever ridden two horses: one was an utter sweetie, but was reserved by the owners of the stables for a lot better riders than me. I only got to ride him twice.

The one I usually got saddled with (pun SO intended) was a small thing with a lot of Shetland pony in him, a skewbald. Looked like a Thelwell pony (short, fat and dopey looking) but had the temperament of Cujo on an insomnia jag. That little shit bit me, kicked me, rubbed me off on a tree and trod on my feet whenever he got the opportunity :-(((

I got the last laugh though. ::singsongs:: He's dogfood and I'm not, nerner nerner ner ner

[identity profile] skater-g8r.livejournal.com 2005-11-27 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
PS..have you got snow there??

[identity profile] skater-g8r.livejournal.com 2005-11-27 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
PPS..have you DLed any DS eps yet?

[personal profile] selenay 2005-11-27 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
When I first start using Internet message boards, the regulars on the board that I joined suggested to newbies that it was a good idea to have a handle rather than using your own name. I needed a name in a hurry so picked up a book from the shelf above me, opened it and picked a name off the page. The '936' is just a random set of numbers that's quick to type whenever there is more than one Selenay registered on a system. Not particularly clever, but it's stuck for over five years now :-)

[identity profile] catspaw-sgjd.livejournal.com 2005-11-28 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
Ah! Yours *was* one of the ones that I wondered about :-) Thank you for putting me out of my misery *g*

But there's sometimes more than one Selenay? ::shakes head in wonder:: Who'd'a thought? I'd never heard that name before - I must read the wrong sort of books :-(
selenay: (Default)

[personal profile] selenay 2005-11-28 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never actually met any of the other 'Selenay's, but on big systems like AIM and LJ there is always at least one registered already. Smaller systems and message boards are usually safe :-)

The daft thing with this name was that I'd only read a few books by the author at the time (Mercedes Lackey, if anyone is interested) and thought that I'd taken the name of a character who wouldn't be seen very often and wasn't hugely important. Um. Too late to change now, though *g*

[identity profile] ducks-in-a-row.livejournal.com 2005-11-27 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you really need to ask? ;-)

Actually, I was tickled to be able to use a phrase that not only included ducks, but seemed appropriate--as in I use my lj to get all my ducks in a row.

[identity profile] catspaw-sgjd.livejournal.com 2005-11-28 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
Well no, the ducks bit I got *g*. The 'in a row' bit I missed though - I guessed there had to be some kind of play on words in there somewhere (hey, c'mon, it's *you* we're talking about here) but I couldn't see it. Thanks, I'll be able to sleep nights now LOL

::crosses name off list of things to puzzle over::

[identity profile] slb44.livejournal.com 2005-11-27 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Mine is my initials and my age when I got my lj account. Cause every other variation of my name was taken. *g*

Nice, straightforward approach, I like that *g*.

[identity profile] ozreison.livejournal.com 2005-11-27 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a bit of a backstory behind ozreison.

Once upon a time, i was on an IRC channel. I'd had many nicks, one of which was very feminine, and got me lots of come-ons and requests for sex. Since this wasn't what I wanted, I went on a bit of a nick changing spree.

I was reading a Sword and Sorceress book, and came across a story about a dragon that was terrorising a village below. The dragon's name was Rei'son. This, and the twist of the story (two heroes came to kill the legendary dragon, and after going through all these hideous tasks found out that the village was terrified of a dragon who had been dead for years), and I switched my nick to Rei`son.

My friends on the channel hated it. They ranted constantly about it. So I decided instead to use the name of my favourite poem, Ozymandias. The channel only allowed 9 characters for a nick, so Ozymandia it was.

I still liked Rei`son, however, and took to using Oz Reison as a pseudonym for sites that looked like they might spam me, so my real identity would remain hidden.

Shortly after I ditched IRC and got into fandom. I had my own domain already, and had been blogging off of that for a number of years. My friends in fandom switched to LJ, and I decided to follow. (Me sheep. Baaa.)

Ozymandia was already taken on LJ. Ozreison seemed the logical next choice.

[identity profile] catspaw-sgjd.livejournal.com 2005-11-28 06:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yay, another one that puzzled me is now clear as day *g*. When I knew you as Ozymandia on the lists, I pretty much got that (although not the reason for the truncation, so that's a mystery solved too *g*) because I know and like the poem. The Rei'son bit though - well, like I said to Sel, I obviously don't read the right books :-(

But Ozymandia was already taken on lj? What are the chances, eh?

This is one of my alternate pseudonyms for online work. I just like the way the words sound - I'm deep like that. :-)

It's interesting how many cat-related pseuds there are on lj. Some of them are amusing.

[identity profile] catspaw-sgjd.livejournal.com 2005-11-28 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
It does roll very nicely off the tongue, you're right there. And yes, cat names do seem to be popular on lj. I wonder why that should be? As opposed to any other kind of animal names? Hmmm...

[identity profile] alphekka-alpha.livejournal.com 2005-11-28 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, I'll bite. 8-) I have a number of handles, possibly a throwback to all those AD&D adventures. {g}

The first name was Hatshepsut from the time I hung out on Ascifi.com and began writing Stargate gen fics. there. (It was a family site.) Daniel was my favourite character because I'm interested in archaeology and mythology too, so I went for something Egyptian. Hatshepsut is one of my heroes. She was a strong pharaoh and as such, a good role model.

Then I found Yahoo groups. My real name is Sue, which is so damn' common, so I wanted a unique name for a change, not Sue4827506 or something. You'd be amazed how many obscure names had already been taken - like Aztec fire-goddess Itzpapalotl ('obsidian butterfly').

I finally turned to Latin, and as we were much into 'Dark Angel' at the time, I went with 'oculi soli', run together. Translates as 'eyes only'.

Then I got into slash... {VBG} As people who knew me as Hatshepsut associated me with gen fics., I decided to take up another name to differentiate between the two genres. So I turned to another long held interest, astronomy, for Alphekka, a.k.a. alpha Coronae Borealis. It's Arabic and means 'the bright one'. {g}

That's the name I use most these days. On lj, I added the _alpha because some woman in Texas had already snagged 'Alphekka'. ::pout::

Interesting thread, Cats. 8-) There are several names I'd wondered about. Thanks!
--

[identity profile] catspaw-sgjd.livejournal.com 2005-11-28 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I went with 'oculi soli', run together. Translates as 'eyes only'.

Doh! My Latin really must be getting rusty, I never spotted that one :-(
But Alphekka, the Bright One - I like that :-)

On lj, I added the _alpha because some woman in Texas had already snagged 'Alphekka'

It's astounding how often the most obscure names occur to different people. I thought it was odd that there are at least two other catspaws since it didn't seem that obvious a choice to me - and that explains why the 'sgjd' bit was stuck on the end. Actually I felt a bit narked when I found out there were other ones. It felt a little bit like identity theft :-(

Interesting thread, Cats. 8-)

It is, isn't it? *g* Fascinating to see the reasoning behind people's choices :-)

[identity profile] alphekka-alpha.livejournal.com 2005-11-28 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] sazzle-02.livejournal.com 2005-11-28 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been called Sazzle for a while, one of my work colleagues decided I needed a nickname (because Sarah just wasn't good enough for her), and it stuck. I just stuck the _02 on the end because it's the user name for my e-mail account and I now can't help but automatically type the _02 on the end.

[identity profile] catspaw-sgjd.livejournal.com 2005-11-29 06:30 am (UTC)(link)
Ah :-) 'Sazz' I figured out, using the 'z' for 'r' model, the 'le' I wondered about. Thanks! Another one crossed off the list :-)

[identity profile] msbeata.livejournal.com 2005-11-28 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Mistress Beata was the matriarch of Angel One. (ST:TNG) Her men pretty themselves up for her (even Riker) and vie for her affections. She's strong, powerful, and has the authority to execute people who piss her off.

I didn't want the 'mistress' part to be misunderstood (plus it was too long to type all the time) and 'Ms' indicates an independent woman who doesn't want to be defined by her marital status.

What did you think it meant?

[identity profile] catspaw-sgjd.livejournal.com 2005-11-29 06:34 am (UTC)(link)
What did you think it meant?

Honestly? I didn't have a clue. Not about the 'beata' part anyway. But then TNG is one of my least favourite ST series, so it's not a great surprise I missed the reference. But I like it! :-)))

I'm glad you answered too - yours is another one I've wondered about for a while because it seemed so off the wall to me. I couldn't fit it to anything that I knew about you. But the light bulb, she is on now :-)

[identity profile] msbeata.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
I often wonder what people think it means. The only person who has mentioned it asked me to beta her fic and when I asked her why she chose me, she said it was because of my name.

Btw, Beata is pronounced bee ah tuh.

[identity profile] teand.livejournal.com 2005-11-29 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
By the time I'd followed the crowds onto the net, most of the obvious and less-than-obvious and bloody bscure names were gone. Finally, I got in with tn_oranges which is, of course, from Leonard Cohen's Susanne

She feeds you tea and oranges that come all the way from China...

I love the song but the line has relevance to me because in Grade 12 English we were studying Canadian poets and this particular song and the teacher was going on and on and on and on about the metaphors in this line until I finally said, "Maybe she's just feeding you tea and oranges that come all the way from China!"

So, to me, the line means: "Sometimes Sigmund, a cigar is just a cigar."

Which I thought made it a pretty funny handle for someone who spends 95% of her time in slash fandom.

Teand is the nominative version.

[identity profile] catspaw-sgjd.livejournal.com 2005-11-29 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
So, to me, the line means: "Sometimes Sigmund, a cigar is just a cigar."

Now there's a philosophy to live life by... *g* And like with Eos, I *thought* there had to be some joke behind the name ;-) Didn't get the reference though and considering The Man I live with I really should have - damn, I live in my very own cultural backwater :-(
