So, it went ahead. Saddam was executed a couple of hour ago. As a human being, I regret this immeasurably. It diminishes me. Deliberately taking life is wrong. It makes no odds whether an individual murders someone, or whether a legislature is sanctioned to carry out the same act: there are no degrees of wrongness here and calling it an 'execution' doesn't alter that fact.

wow! I suppose I never really expected them to go ahead.

I'm in two minds about this. On the one hand, being a Christian and specifically a Catholic, I feel that the death penalty is wrong on every level, but on the other hand... politically speaking, I dont think they had any option. Even if they'd banished him, there was always the chance that he could get power again and so the lives of many had to be weighed against the life of that one. THAT's what saddens me more than anything, that we have to take a life becuase there's no option.

I'm very conflicted about it all so I'm glad I didnt have to make this decision.

DH and I were discussing this when it came on CNN news. DH said that he disagrees with the death penalty being applied to anyone, including Saddam Hussein. I agree with him.

I'm against the death penalty, believe in prison. To me, that's a fitting punishment.

What bothers me is we don't have the death penalty in the UK, so being party to Saddam's execution means we participated in something we wouldn't do here. And then there was the loss of dignity. Whatever awful things he did, I'd like to think we are better than that. After this, I'm not sure we have the moral high ground anymore.
