I know some of you guys knit ([livejournal.com profile] perclexed, [livejournal.com profile] reedfem, [livejournal.com profile] babs_sg1, not looking at you *in particular* ::grin::)

Does anyone know of a good site for knitting patterns? Either freebies or paid-for downloads, I'm not that fussy - except, not vintage, 'cos I'm not anywhere near that tiny ;-) I've taken the notion for knitting again and I have a quantity of cotton chenille (knits as 4-ply) which I quite fancy for a cardigan or a shrug, something along those lines. I just don't have a pattern. I've kind of exhausted all the sites I can think of, and shops that sell patterns are getting kind of like hens' teeth over here. So, can anyone help me out with somewhere new?

Oh good lord are there sites. Do you want me to send you an invite to ravelry? (ravelry.com) Just let me know which email you'd like me to send it to. You can browse based on yarn weight, I think.

I like chicknits.com patterns for cardigans. She's got very basic but pretty groovy designs. I'll have to think about other pullovers...I have tons of bookmarks...hey, you know, you might browse the knitting category here: http://del.icio.us/perclexed

I'll brainstorm on my end as well. WHEE!

Thanks! I'll toddle on over to dec.icio.us and make hay :-) And ravelry.com sounds promising, thanks again! Browsing by yarn weight is *exactly* what I'm looking for. Um, just send the invite to my usual addy - the yahoo one - please.

I've had a look at chicknits - there are a couple of patterns there that I fell in love with at once, but unfortunately they're DK patterns, not 4 ply. Still, I'm thinking one of them might be next up ;-)

Hee for your icon! Yarn on the hoof, right enough ;-)

Fudge. It appears that the invite feature had disappeared. However, they're churning through new signups very quickly. Just check out the home page.

Maybe Garnstudio? http://garnstudio.com/index_lang.php
Phildar? http://www.phildar.com/

I'll try to think of other European based companies that might have patterns.

I love that icon. BOth of ours! :D

Oops, one last bit. I'm sure you know about knitty.com, but magknits.com may have some 4-ply patterns. Magknits was absorbed into yarnforward.co.uk recently, which looks to be an actual magazine. :/

poshyarn.co.uk has a ton of links in her blog, if not on the site. I'm ashamed to admit I've bought a few skeins from her a couple of weeks ago...it should be here by now actually. Huh.

Ysolda.me.uk has some shrugs for fairly reasonable pattern prices, I think. Maybe Rowan has free patterns on their site?

I should have put this into one consolidated comment, but I'm typing this while also running a conference call. :D

Ah multitasking... :-D

Thanks, m'dear - you've given me plenty to get going on here. I shall spend a happy morning browsing - what little I did last night turned up a couple of lovely sock patterns, one in particular that I can't *wait* to get started on :-) I'll keep you posted about the four ply!

Dude! Let me know when you get on Ravelry.

How about http://www.knittingpatterncentral.com

I already tried knittingpatterncentral - good try though ;-)

I think I'll have to go down the ravelry route - just about everyone seems to think that's a Really Good Plan. I'll keep you posted!

Most of the yarn manufacturers have patterns on their websites. I think most of the big ones I use have already been mentioned. I'll add e-PatternsCentral (http://www.e-patternscentral.com/), The Daily Knitter (http://www.dailyknitter.com/) and Knitting on the Net (http://www.knittingonthenet.com/).

Thank you :-) I've found another couple of patterns I like on The Daily Knitter and Knitting on the Net - alas, no four ply cardigan yet though :-( Safely bookmarked though, for me to keep an eye on :-)

Everyone's recommended the sites I would recommend. Ravelry is awesome! Sign up and wait for your invitation--they send out a lot in a day so even if the wait seems long, you'll be in within 10 days or so.

knitty.com which is an online free magazine is pretty awesome and you can access their past issues.

knittingpatterncentral.com is also a good site but Ravelry--ahh--love love love Ravelry.

::bookmarks knitty.com::

Thanks for that one - I'll have fun browsing there later. And I'll apply to ravelry, since you all seem most impressed with it :-D

I'm babsaknitr over there-so when you get on, friend me. Alas I don't have many friends there yet.

The really neat thing about Ravelry and something I am slowly but surely doing is that you can put your yarn stash, your patterns, your Works in Progress on lists. You can search for patterns multiple ways. I usually check, only knitting, only with pictures, and only free and then whatever type of project I'm searching for. Ravelry is also responsible for me considering doing more projects without patterns--allowing myself to be a little more free with my projects.

I'll do that :-) It seems like it'll take a while before the invite comes in, but I'm looking forward to it!

What sort of things do you do without patterns? What kind of textiles do you come up with?

I've become more willing to design my own socks--or at least think of doing it! I have some really great lace-weight yarn I got really cheap at a thrift store and I'm planning on designing my own shawl to use it up. I kind of am starting to look at knitting like cooking--using recipes-know the basics and then add your own twist to things.

That's great, if you have the confidence to start trying things out like that and cooking, I guess, is a good analogy :-) So, are you doing this with stitch patterns, or with colour, or both?

Someone who's had a huge influence on me in knitting and needlepoint is Kaffe Fassett. I love his confidence with colour. But while I'm at the point of going off into flights of fancy with needlepoint, I've never really thought about doing it with knitting. Maybe now's the time to start!

I have to recommend everyone's Ravelry recommendation :-) I'm archerygirl over there. You can browse by yarn weight, style, free, online - whatever. The great thing is that you can see people's comments on the patterns and it links to everyone who has used that pattern in their projects so that you can see what it actually looks like when real people rather than trained professionals do it. The forums are also great for getting recommendations on patterns and yarn and so on.

It's a great site :-)

I applied for an invite this morning - seems it'll take about a week or so to come through. I'll friend you too when I get there, if I may?

I meant to ask you but forgot - that lovely scarf you knitted for going to Canada? What yarn was that?

You may certainly friend me :-)

For that scarf, I used a yarn by Stylecraft called Gypsy. It comes in various colours but I still think the silvery grey is the prettiest. I used 4.5mm needles (the yarn actually says 4mm but it worked great with 4.5), cast on 45 stitches and knitted until all 5 skeins of it were gone. It's gorgeously warm as well as being darned pretty :-)
